Retrieval Practice, Spacing & Test Anxiety: A Better High School Study Routine

Many students study in ways that make learning feel smooth rather than ways that make memory easier to retrieve later. Rereading, highlighting, and last-minute cramming can create a powerful sense of familiarity. The problem is that an exam usually asks students to produce information without the page sitting in front of them.
A better high-school routine combines three ideas: retrieval practice, spacing, and realistic exam preparation. Used well, these strategies also give students clearer information about what they know and can make the testing process more familiar before the high-stakes moment arrives.
Retrieval practice: make memory do the work
Retrieval practice means trying to bring information to mind before looking at the answer. That can be as simple as closing a notebook and writing everything remembered about a concept, answering a practice question, explaining a process aloud, or using flashcards in a way that requires an answer before the card is flipped.
The key is the attempt. A retrieval failure is not wasted time; it is feedback. Students discover exactly where access breaks down, check the correct information, and then return to it later.
The Institute of Education Sciences practice guide recommends using quizzing and active retrieval to promote learning. The American Psychological Association's overview of research-tested study strategies likewise highlights repeated retrieval and reports stronger learning when retrieval opportunities are spaced rather than massed together.
Spacing: return before the exam forces you to
Spacing does not require a complicated algorithm. For most high-school classes, the first improvement is simply to stop putting all practice into one night. A student might retrieve the same core material briefly on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday instead of rereading it for one long session on Sunday.
The pause between sessions matters. Some forgetting makes the next retrieval effortful enough to be informative. When a student can no longer produce an answer easily, that struggle identifies what needs another round of practice.
Why rereading can mislead students
Rereading is not useless. The problem is using rereading as the only evidence of learning. Seeing the same sentence repeatedly increases fluency and familiarity. Students may interpret that feeling as “I know this,” even though they have not tested whether they can reconstruct the idea independently.
A simple correction is a closed-notes check:
- Read or review a small chunk.
- Close the source.
- Write or say what you remember.
- Check accuracy.
- Correct the gaps.
- Schedule another retrieval later.
This turns studying from exposure into a feedback loop.
Exam preparation: simulate the kind of retrieval the test will demand
As an exam approaches, practice should become more representative of the real task. If students will write explanations, they should practice explanations—not only recognition. If they will solve unfamiliar problems, they need mixed problems. If timing is important, later sessions can include realistic time constraints.
A study schedule can move from easier support to more independent performance:
- Early: short retrieval with notes available for quick correction.
- Middle: closed-notes questions, mixed topics, and error tracking.
- Late: realistic question types, less prompting, and selected timed practice.
Students should spend more time on what they cannot yet retrieve than on material that merely feels comfortable.
Can retrieval practice make test anxiety worse?
It is reasonable to worry that more quizzes could create more anxiety. The design matters. Retrieval used as frequent low- or no-stakes practice is different from repeatedly attaching high consequences to every attempt.
In a classroom-based study of 1,408 middle and high school students who experienced retrieval-practice programs, 72% reported that retrieval practice made them less nervous for tests and exams, while 22% reported about the same nervousness and 6% reported more. The authors encouraged low/no-stakes retrieval as a classroom learning strategy. See the study.
Those results are self-reports from a particular classroom context, so they should not be turned into a promise that retrieval practice eliminates anxiety. They do support a useful principle: students do not need their first serious retrieval attempt to happen on the graded exam.
Build a low-stakes retrieval routine before the high-stakes test
A practical teacher routine can take five minutes:
- Give two or three no-notes questions on previously taught material.
- Have students commit to an answer before discussion.
- Provide immediate correction or model reasoning.
- Ask students to mark one item for another retrieval in a later class.
The same routine can be done privately on paper, digitally, orally with a partner, or as a brief whole-class check. The important features are retrieval, feedback, and another opportunity later.
Pair retrieval with an anxiety-management plan
Preparation is only one part of test anxiety. Students may also benefit from practical routines such as writing down worries before the test, reviewing prior errors without self-judgment, replacing catastrophic predictions with specific preparation statements, and using a short breathing/reset routine when attention starts to spiral.
The goal is not to tell students that anxiety is imaginary. It is to give them more controllable actions before and during the test.
A one-week exam-prep example
- Seven days out: identify exam scope and build a short schedule.
- Five days out: retrieve major concepts without notes; diagnose gaps.
- Three days out: mix topics and practice representative question types.
- Two days out: revisit errors and weak areas.
- One day out: brief retrieval, logistics, and sleep—not an all-night rescue mission.
- Exam day: use a familiar reset routine and begin with a planned approach.
