Sam Houston & the Republic: A 3-Day Mini-Unit with Readers Theater
Share
The “Sam Houston & the Republic” script (grades 3-5) lets students relive big moments: signing the Declaration of Independence, leading at San Jacinto, guiding the young republic. Scenes are short, ideal for budding readers.
Three-Day Plan
- Day 1 – Map & Vocabulary: Chart Houston’s life path (Virginia → Tennessee → Texas) and preview key terms such as annexation. (Activity not incl.)
- Day 2 – Readers Theater: Perform all eight scenes twice. Encourage expression by pausing to discuss Houston’s motives.
- Day 3 – Persuasive Speech: Students write a one-paragraph speech urging U.S. Congress to annex Texas, using script lines for evidence.
Optional Extension (Teacher-Created)
Not inside the PDF. Have students design a personal “Republic flag,” then hold a gallery walk where classmates leave sticky-note compliments.
