How to Teach Study Skills in High School: Build Systems, Not Just Tips

Study skills are easier to teach when students see them as one connected system rather than ten unrelated tips. The Crash Course Study Skills series moves through note-taking, reading, memory, planning, focus, procrastination, exam preparation, test anxiety, academic writing, and exercise. That sequence gives teachers a useful opportunity: instead of assigning a “study tip of the day,” students can repeatedly ask the same question—What problem is this strategy trying to solve, and when would I actually use it?

A compact high-school unit works especially well when the first week builds the learning system and the second week applies that system under academic pressure. The goal is not to convince students that one note-taking format, planner, timer, or study routine is universally best. The goal is to help them diagnose a learning problem, choose a strategy, test it, and adjust.

Week 1: build the learning system

1. Taking Notes — capture meaning, not every word

Students often mistake more notes for better notes. A better starting point is to treat notes as a selective representation of meaning. Listening, deciding what matters, organizing relationships, and leaving enough mental capacity to understand the message are more useful than trying to create a transcript.

After the lesson, have students compare two pages of notes and identify what each page would help them do later: reconstruct the main idea, answer a question, explain a process, or retrieve key details. That shifts the discussion away from “Which note-taking method is best?” toward “Which representation fits this task?”

2. Reading Assignments — prioritize before you optimize

“Read faster” is often the wrong first instruction. Students need to know what the source is for, how important it is relative to other assignments, and what they should be able to do afterward. Purpose should drive pace.

A simple classroom routine is to preview the assignment, name the purpose, choose a reading depth, then close the text and retrieve the important ideas. Highlighting can support that process, but highlighting is not evidence that the information can be recalled or explained.

3. Memory — replace familiarity with retrieval

Rereading creates familiarity, and familiarity can feel like mastery. A more diagnostic routine is to close the notes and try to produce the idea from memory. If retrieval fails, students have learned something important about what still needs work.

This aligns with broader learning-science guidance. The Institute of Education Sciences practice guide on organizing instruction and study recommends spacing learning over time and using quizzing and active retrieval to promote learning. The American Psychological Association's study-strategy overview likewise emphasizes repeated retrieval and spacing rather than passive review.

4. Planning & Organization — give every tool one job

Students frequently try to remember assignments, appointments, ideas, and deadlines in one mental pile. A reliable system separates functions. Tasks record actions. Calendars hold commitments tied to a date or time. Capture tools prevent new information from disappearing. Review routines keep the system trustworthy.

The most useful planning question is not “Which app should I use?” It is “Where does this kind of information live, and when will I look at it again?” A beautifully organized system that is never reviewed is not a system students can depend on.

5. Focus & Concentration — redesign the situation before blaming willpower

Students often describe rapid task switching as multitasking. In practice, switching attention has a cost: the mind must disengage from one target and reorient to another. Teachers can help students make focus easier before work starts by removing competing cues, deciding what task matters for the next block, and choosing a work-rest rhythm that matches the assignment.

Week 2: apply the system under academic pressure

6. Procrastination — lower the friction of starting

“Just be more disciplined” is rarely an actionable intervention. Students can instead diagnose why a task is being delayed. Does success feel unlikely? Does the task feel low-value? Are distractions immediately rewarding? Is the deadline far enough away that the consequence feels abstract?

Then shrink the next action. “Write the paper” is vague and heavy. “Open the document and write three possible claims” is concrete. Starting friction matters because action can create information, momentum, and a more realistic sense of difficulty.

7. Studying for Exams — practice the performance you will need

Exam preparation should increasingly resemble the demands of the exam. Students can schedule short sessions across several days, retrieve without notes, practice representative question types, check errors, and return to weak material. That is different from spending two hours rereading everything the night before.

8. Test Anxiety — combine preparation with pressure-management tools

Test anxiety should not be reduced to “calm down.” Students need both academic preparation and tools for managing the pressure around performance. Low-stakes retrieval, error analysis, expressive writing, and realistic reframing can all become part of a pre-test routine.

One useful piece of classroom evidence comes from a study of 1,408 middle and high school students in classrooms using retrieval practice. In the survey, 72% reported that retrieval practice made them less nervous for tests and exams. That is self-reported evidence, not a guarantee for every student, but it is a useful counterpoint to the assumption that every additional retrieval opportunity necessarily creates more anxiety. 9. Papers & Essays — separate the stages of thinking

Students can make writing harder by trying to research, draft, revise, and copyedit simultaneously. A staged workflow reduces that cognitive load: prewrite to surface ideas and questions, research with a stopping rule, draft for meaning, revise structure and evidence, then edit language and mechanics.

10. Exercise — support the learner, not just the assignment

Movement belongs in a study-skills conversation because learning happens in a body, but it should not be sold as a magic academic hack. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of exercise and adolescent cognition reported benefits across several cognitive domains while also noting the heterogeneity of the evidence. The practical classroom message is modest: regular movement can support the conditions for learning, but it does not replace sleep, instruction, retrieval practice, or time on task.

A repeatable routine for every episode

  1. Name the problem. What learning bottleneck is this episode addressing?
  2. Explain the mechanism. Why might the current habit fail?
  3. Choose one strategy. What behavior will the student test?
  4. Apply it to real work. Use an actual upcoming reading, exam, paper, or deadline.
  5. Reflect and adapt. Did it make the work more accurate, manageable, or retrievable?

This keeps a video-based unit active. Students are not merely watching someone explain study skills; they are building a personal decision system for learning.

A practical 2-week sequence

  • Week 1: Taking Notes, Reading Assignments, Memory, Planning & Organization, Focus & Concentration.
  • Week 2: Procrastination, Studying for Exams, Test Anxiety, Papers & Essays, Exercise.

Weekly assessments can be used flexibly rather than treated as mandatory Friday tests. A teacher might assign selected retrieval questions as homework, use them for intervention or review, or reserve one culminating unit assessment for the end of the two weeks.
