Updated for the 2026–2027 school year • Last updated August 2026
August is the month to teach the routines that make the rest of the year easier. Reader’s Theater is useful because students can practice speaking, listening, turn-taking, and discussion without first having to write a long response.
What teachers are planning for in August
| Planning focus | When | Classroom use |
|---|---|---|
| First-day speaking routines | First week | Use short monologues or scripts to practice volume, pacing, and listening. |
| Classroom community | First 2–3 weeks | Choose SEL texts about empathy, apology, honesty, or teamwork. |
| Digital behavior | Early semester | Use netiquette as a concrete discussion about online choices. |
| Performance norms | Before longer scripts | Teach how to mark parts, rehearse, and give specific peer feedback. |

A low-prep routine you can reuse all month
Use a first-week rehearsal routine: model one paragraph, assign roles, give students two minutes to mark their lines, rehearse once, then ask for one specific compliment and one next-step goal.
Keep the learning target narrow. One strong question, one short reread, and one written response usually gives students more useful practice than stacking several unrelated holiday worksheets into the same period.
Choose by grade band
Grades 1–3 can start with monologues; grades 3–5 have several SEL scripts; grades 6–12 can use the free voice-acting lesson to establish performance and discussion expectations.
Make the calendar work for your class
Not every observance belongs in every classroom, and dates for cultural and religious holidays can vary by year. Use this page as a planning menu: choose the topics that fit your standards, community, grade band, and school calendar. The goal is a useful reading, discussion, or performance task—not checking off every date.
