Teach Grade 4 Texas history through a complete five-day week built around a 6-stop Dynamic History interactive investigation with 24 guided auto-graded tasks. Students connect cattle markets, water and trail geography, expanding railroads, western forts, commercial bison hunting, settlement, and the Red River War while comparing how the same changes created opportunity for some people and serious costs for others.
This Week 15 resource coordinates the interactive Dynamic History module with Standard and Accessible print alternatives, a short Texas History for Teachers video expanded into a full systems investigation, the complete Cattle, Rails, Bison, and a Changing Texas Readers Theater, two optional Mini Reader pathways, and complete Day 3, Day 4, and Day 5 assessment banks. Teachers can use the full five-day sequence or select individual components to fit their schedule.

What students practice
- Cattle markets and movement: explain why distant buyers encouraged long cattle drives and why water, river crossings, workers, brands, records, and costs shaped the cattle business.
- Railroads and uneven opportunity: trace how rail connections changed cattle routes, freight, town growth, and access to markets while recognizing that transportation did not benefit every community equally.
- Forts and western expansion: examine how western forts stored supplies, supported military roads and travel, and also extended U.S. Army pressure into Comanche, Kiowa, and other Plains homelands.
- Bison and the hide trade: explain why bison supported many parts of Plains life and how commercial demand for hides accelerated herd destruction and changed communities and temporary hunting towns.
- Red River War cause and effect: connect Adobe Walls, Palo Duro Canyon, horses, winter supplies, military strategy, Quanah Parker, and forced reservation confinement.
- Systems thinking and perspective: use map evidence, video evidence, discussion, performance, and reading to explain how economic growth, transportation, settlement, resource loss, conflict, and political response happened at the same time.

Flexible Day 4 reading pathways
The Readers Theater is the primary Day 4 experience, but students do not need to complete all three texts. The Original Mini Reader provides an equivalent Grade 4 pathway for silent reading, make-up work, partner work, small groups, or classes without enough readers for every role. The Accessible Mini Reader teaches the same assessable historical core with shorter sentences and reduced idea load for students who need additional reading support. All three pathways return to the same discussion and Day 4 assessment.
Built for flexible classrooms
Use the complete five-day sequence, select one Day 4 reading pathway, or use the Standard and Accessible Days 1-2 print modules when devices are limited. Equivalent reading pathways keep the assessed historical core consistent while allowing teachers to adjust oral reading, independent reading, small-group support, and reading complexity.
Assessment options
The Dynamic History module uses 24 guided auto-graded formative tasks across Days 1-2. Day 3, Day 4, and Day 5 each include vocabulary, short-answer, challenge, and multiple-choice assessment options, allowing teachers to choose the mix of discussion, written response, performance, review, and quiz work that fits the class period.
Best fit
Designed for Grade 4 Texas Social Studies and aligned to Week 15 learning targets for the cattle industry, railroads, western forts, Buffalo Soldiers, commercial bison hunting, settlement, the Red River War, geography, cause and effect, perspective, and economic change. This resource works well for whole-class instruction, small groups, content-area reading, independent work, substitute plans, review, and blended print/digital classrooms.
Technology note: Dynamic History and the Day 3 video require internet access. The Standard and Accessible print modules, Day 3 worksheet, Readers Theater, both Mini Readers, and assessment content provide substantial offline alternatives for the week.
