This Cesar Chavez Historical Figure Readers Theater Script engages students in an interactive narrative instead of reading a dry history textbook. Abigail and Benjamin follow César Chávez from his early years as a migrant farmworker to leading the United Farm Workers, observing how he and his allies use boycotts, speeches, and unity to improve the lives of those who grow America’s food.
Script Summary:
Abigail and Benjamin see Chávez learn organizing techniques from Fred Ross and join Dolores Huerta and Gilbert Padilla to form the UFW. They witness harsh field conditions and low wages forcing farmworkers to rely on collective action. They observe the first grape boycott’s success and later hear Chávez’s “Wrath of Grapes” speech (a primary source), highlighting pesticide dangers. With consumer support, the UFW gains safer conditions and fair contracts, proving that peaceful boycotts and moral arguments can reshape entire industries. Chávez’s legacy shows consumers and workers that unity can secure dignity, health, and lasting improvements.
