This U.S. History Reading Resource “Mini Reader” is based on Crossing the Delaware and the Trenton Victory and it tells the story of how George Washington led a daring surprise attack that saved the struggling Continental Army in December 1776. After a string of defeats and a bitter winter camp along the Delaware River, soldiers were cold, hungry, and ready to leave when their enlistments ended. The mini reader shows how Washington quietly planned a nighttime crossing of the icy river, risked everything on a Christmas attack against the Hessian garrison at Trenton, and turned near collapse into new hope for independence.

Students follow Abigail and Benjamin as they bring food to weary soldiers, overhear Washington’s secret plan, watch lanterns slide across the black river, and finally hear the bells of victory ring out. Along the way, the narrative explains who the Hessians were, why mercenaries were hired to crush the rebellion, and how one bold stroke could change the mood of an entire country. The story ends by showing how the Trenton victory lifted spirits, encouraged soldiers to stay in the army, and transformed the Continental Army from a fleeing band of farmers into a determined force fighting for survival and liberty.

This resource is meant for grades 5-8 students and should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
