This U.S. History Differentiated Readers Theater script is based on Foreign Allies: Lafayette and France (1777-1778). It tells the story of how the American colonies gained crucial support from France during the Revolutionary War. Marquis de Lafayette, a young French nobleman, was inspired by America's fight for freedom. He traveled to America at his own expense to help General George Washington's army, becoming a brave and important leader. At the same time, Benjamin Franklin went to France to convince King Louis XVI to support the American cause. Through many meetings and discussions, Franklin persuaded the French king to send money, soldiers, and ships. The arrival of French troops, led by General Rochambeau, greatly strengthened the Continental Army. Together, the American and French forces planned and won key battles, including the decisive victory at Yorktown, which led to the end of the war. This story highlights the importance of friendship, teamwork, and international alliances in achieving a common goal.
