Free Thanksgiving History Reader’s Theater | Grades 6–8 | 22 Speaking Roles

A student team intends to tell how Sarah Josepha Hale wrote one letter to Abraham Lincoln and created Thanksgiving in 1863. Its timeline reveals decades of Hale’s sustained advocacy, preexisting Thanksgiving practices, earlier presidential proclamations, and the Civil War context. The students distinguish influence from authority, long-term conditions from decisions, and a turning point from an absolute beginning. They replace an appealing single-cause account with a stronger multicausal explanation of the national observance.

Why teachers use this resource

Analyze decades of advocacy, the Civil War, and the 1863 proclamation without reducing history to one letter. Students practice purposeful oral reading, text-evidence discussions, and thoughtful historical interpretation.

What is included

  • Original Mini Reader and Accessible Mini Reader (same historical inquiry at different reading loads)
  • Teacher Guide with historical context, differentiated instruction and classroom pacing
  • 10 vocabulary terms, 10 two-part short-answer prompts and 5 challenge questions
  • 20-question multiple-choice assessment, teacher answer key and a self-grading Google Forms quiz
