This U.S. History Differentiated Readers Theater script is based on George Washington Stepping Down (1783). It tells the story of General George Washington's decision to give up power after leading America to victory in the Revolutionary War. Despite some wanting him to become king, Washington believes in democracy and refuses the offer. He remembers the story of Cincinnatus, a Roman leader who also gave up power to return to his farm. By stepping down, Washington sets a powerful example for peaceful transitions of power. His actions contrast with other leaders who cling to power, showing the world a new way of leadership. Washington's choice helps establish democratic principles in the United States and sets standards for future leaders.

This script should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
