Bring a playful Halloween mystery into your ELA block with a free, no-prep Reader's Theater for grades 3-5. The Whispering Pumpkin: A Halloween Mystery gives students a clear, kid-friendly mystery to solve while they practice comprehension, text evidence, character thinking, speaking, and collaborative discussion.
Students follow Maya, Priya, Eli, Ben, and Sam as a giant cardboard pumpkin seems to whisper Sam's Story Night welcome. Instead of accepting the first spooky explanation, the characters listen carefully, test clues, notice movement around the display, and figure out what is really happening. Once the mystery is solved, the group helps Sam handle a second problem: reading too fast when he feels nervous in front of an audience.
Classroom Use
The 10-scene Reader's Theater includes six speaking roles. For larger classes, divide students into groups of six so several groups can rehearse or perform at the same time. The same assessed content is also available through an Original Mini Reader and an Accessible Mini Reader.

Text Summary
Sam is supposed to welcome families to Halloween Story Night, but he is nervous about reading in front of people and slips away to practice alone. When his exact welcome line seems to come from a giant cardboard pumpkin, his friends investigate. The clues lead them to Sam and then to a second challenge: helping him slow down, breathe, pause, and feel ready to speak in front of the room.
