This Johnny Appleseed Readers Theater Script engages students in an interactive narrative instead of reading a dry history textbook and helps develop listening and speaking skills as students practice expressive voice acting. Students will explore the exaggerated aspects of a tall tale and learn about the heroic legend of the main character.
Script Summary:
Johnny Appleseed, a beloved American legend and real-life pioneer (John Chapman), tells his own story of traveling the frontier as a nomadic wanderer. With a dream of feeding the people, he planted apple nurseries and became an organized businessman. His apple trees were naturally propagated by cross-pollenation (not by grafting), and his cider was made safe by the disinfecting effects of fermentation. This story also asks whether the evidence is convincing that he was really John Chapman.
