This U.S. History Reading Resource “Mini Reader” tells the story of Liberty or Death: Patrick Henry’s Speech (1775), and how a powerful speech in Virginia helped push the colonies closer to open resistance against Britain. After the First Continental Congress sent petitions to King George III and Boston suffered under a harsh blockade, many colonists still hoped for peace. The Virginia Convention meets in Richmond to decide whether to keep asking politely or to prepare for war.

Leaders like Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Peyton Randolph, and Richard Henry Lee gather at St. John’s Church to debate their choices. The mini reader follows Abigail and Benjamin as they listen to news in the courthouse square, watch delegates arrive, and see how ordinary families react to rumors of war. Inside the church, students witness cautious calls for more petitions, serious warnings from Washington, and Patrick Henry’s famous “give me liberty or give me death” challenge that convinces Virginia to form a militia. These decisions do not yet declare independence, but they show how one colony’s courage and conviction could inspire others and help set the stage for Lexington, Concord, and the American Revolution.

This resource is meant for grades 5-8 students and should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
