This reader’s theater script is based on the primary source "Of Plimoth Plantation" (1630~1650) by William Bradford.

Note: "Plimoth" is now known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.

This script should take about ~50 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. Extra time for discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should be planned.

This script includes the following 5 short acts that are each based on 2 of the 10 chapters of William Bradford's primary source titled "Of Plimoth Plantation."

Act 1: The Dawn of a New Faithful Journey

The Pilgrims face religious persecution in England and decide to seek a place where they can worship freely. They move to Holland, finding religious tolerance but struggling with poverty and cultural differences. Seeking support for a new life, they return to England to secure funding for a voyage to the New World. They prepare to depart, leaving loved ones behind and placing their trust in God.

Act 2: Trials and Triumphs in Holland

In Holland, the Pilgrims adjust to a new culture and hard labor. Under Pastor John Robinson's wise leadership, their community grows and earns respect for their honesty and hard work. Concerned about losing their English identity and the challenges their children face, they decide to journey to the New World to preserve their faith and way of life.

Act 3: The Path to a New World

The Pilgrims plan their voyage, discussing destinations and seeking permission from the English crown. They face obstacles securing funding, leading to tension. Merchant Thomas Weston offers support but demands harsh terms. Despite setbacks, they finalize preparations and bid farewell to those staying behind, trusting in God's guidance.

Act 4: The Trials at Sea and Final Preparations

Departing on the Mayflower, the Pilgrims encounter delays due to ship problems. The Speedwell proves unfit, forcing some to abandon the journey. Overcoming disputes with investors, they face storms and sickness at sea. Their faith and unity help them persevere as they look forward to reaching the New World.

Act 5: The Perilous Voyage and Finding New Hope

After a difficult voyage, the Pilgrims sight Cape Cod. Grateful for their safe arrival, they give thanks to God. They explore the area to find a settlement spot, facing a hostile encounter with Native Americans but remaining unharmed. Choosing a secure harbor, they establish Plymouth, hopeful for the future and committed to building a community based on their faith and values.
