A Grade 6 Minnesota fur-trade lesson on Grand Portage, Anishinaabe agency, canoe technology, labor, routes, exchange, and markets.

Bring the Grand Portage fur-trade network to life through geography, technology, labor, and exchange. Students examine why Gichi Onigaming/Grand Portage mattered, how Anishinaabe knowledge shaped travel and trade, and how people and goods moved through a wider Great Lakes economy.

Students connect birch-bark canoe technology, the portage route, rendezvous exchange, voyageurs, market networks, and cross-cultural negotiation while keeping Anishinaabe agency visible. The lesson builds the trade foundation without taking over the treaty and sovereignty content reserved for the next product.
