A Grade 6 Minnesota industrialization lesson on St. Anthony Falls, flour milling, iron mining, rail networks, labor, resources, and immigration.
Connect Minnesota’s natural resources to industrial growth through St. Anthony Falls, flour milling, iron mining, rail transportation, labor, and immigration. Students explain why industries grew in particular places and how production linked Minnesota to national and global markets.
Students examine the 1878 mill explosion, the growth of Minneapolis milling, the Vermilion and Mesabi ranges, immigrant labor, and transportation networks. The lesson also asks who benefited from industrial growth, how landscapes changed, and how new economic systems affected communities.
