A Grade 6 Minnesota lesson on Hmong and Somali migration, refugee experiences, oral history, community building, citizenship, and climate resilience.
Bring Minnesota history into the present through refugee journeys, community building, citizenship, oral histories, and current challenges. Students examine Hmong migration after warfare in Southeast Asia, Somali migration and refugee networks, and the institutions communities built in Minnesota.
The lesson uses migration stories to distinguish refugee experiences from other forms of migration and asks students to evaluate how oral histories preserve evidence. It closes by comparing community responses to climate-related challenges and considering how present-day Minnesota continues to change.
