A Grade 6 Minnesota statehood lesson covering the 1849 Territory, constitutional government, federalism, representation, and 1858 admission.

Move from Minnesota Territory to statehood through maps, constitutional choices, representation, and federalism. Students trace the 1849 Territory, changing boundaries, St. Paul’s role, the 1857 constitutional process, and Minnesota’s admission as the 32nd state in 1858.

The lesson goes beyond a statehood date by asking how territorial and state governments worked, whose voices were represented, and which perspectives were missing. Students connect Minnesota government to the federal system and build a civics foundation for later state-history topics.

Part 4 of the 10-lesson Minnesota State History series.
