A Grade 6 Minnesota lesson on treaty-making, land, unequal power, sovereignty, retained rights, and living Dakota and Anishinaabe governments.
Teach Minnesota treaty history as an ongoing relationship among land, power, agreements, rights, and sovereignty. Students examine treaty-making in the 1837–1855 period, different understandings of land and ownership, unequal negotiating power, and the continuing importance of treaty rights today.
The lesson distinguishes treaties from ordinary contracts and treats Dakota and Anishinaabe Nations as sovereign governments rather than groups that disappeared into the past. Students compare perspectives, trace consequences, and connect historical treaty language to present-day rights and responsibilities.
