A Grade 6 Minnesota lesson on the 1862 U.S.–Dakota War, treaty pressures, choices, conflicting narratives, confinement, removal, and memory.
Teach the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862 through a careful chain of causes, choices, consequences, and historical memory. Students connect treaty pressures, hunger, delayed payments, the Acton killings, disagreements within Dakota communities, warfare, and the experiences of civilians.
The lesson continues through trials, confinement, removal, and the long-term consequences of 1862–1863. Students compare narratives without creating false balance, distinguish documented evidence from interpretation, and consider how communities remember difficult history.
