Overview
Immigration, Industry, Labor, and Modern New York brings Grade 4 students into the human story behind New York's growth through a dramatic Reader's Theater script, an Original Mini Reader, and an Accessible Mini Reader. Students follow suitcases, ferry tickets, sewing needles, train tickets, and subway cards to explore Ellis Island, immigrant neighborhoods, factory labor, unions, the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, the Great Migration, Harlem, and modern New York's changing economy.
Students learn how immigrants, migrants, workers, and cultural communities helped transform New York. The deeper question asks students to consider how movement, work, culture, and reform can change a state over time.
