This U.S. History Reading Resource “Mini Reader” explores the powerful contradictions of Slavery and the Revolution (1770s–1780s), when Americans fought for independence while millions remained enslaved. Students learn about Crispus Attucks, Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation, and the roles African Americans played on both sides of the war. They’ll trace how ideals of liberty inspired Northern abolition and future civil rights movements.

This resource is meant for grades 5-8 students and should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
