This U.S. History Reading Resource “Mini Reader” is based on Sybil Ludington and Molly Pitcher and tells the story of how women and young people took brave, unexpected roles in the Revolutionary War. In April 1777, sixteen-year-old Sybil Ludington rides through a stormy night in New York to warn scattered militiamen that the British are attacking the supply depot at Danbury. Her long, dangerous ride helps rally local forces in time. A year later, in June 1778, Mary Ludwig Hays—remembered as Molly Pitcher—carries water to exhausted soldiers at the Battle of Monmouth and then steps in to man a cannon when her husband collapses in the intense heat.

The mini reader follows Abigail and Benjamin as they witness how these stories spread and see that heroism is not limited to officers and generals. Through rich narrative detail, students learn how Sybil’s midnight ride and Molly’s actions under fire challenged traditional expectations for women and youth, and how their stories became legends that represent the courage of many unnamed patriots. This resource highlights hidden contributions to the war effort and invites students to think about how ordinary people today can answer the call to “do what is right, when it matters most.”

This resource is meant for grades 5-8 students and should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
