The Fisherman and His Wife Readers Theater Script engages students in an interactive story instead of reading a third person narrative. This activity helps improves reading fluency, speed, accuracy, and expression while developing listening and speaking skills as students actively practice expressive voice acting.
Script Summary:
This story is about a poor Fisherman who finds and frees a magic fish. His Wife urges him to ask the fish for a snug cottage. She’s soon unhappy and wants a castle, then to be King. Though the Fisherman is dreading the fish’s reaction, he keeps granting her wishes. The Wife demands even more—becoming Emperor, then Pope. The sea grows stormy and dreadful, but the fish gives her wish each time. The Fisherman senses trouble, as the ocean’s color changes and the weather worsens. She becomes Pope but still craves more power, now wanting to rule the sun and moon. The fisherman begs the fish, which finally refuses and sends them back to the pigsty. Their enormous greed and craving for power vanish, and they return to living humbly again.
