This U.S. History Reading Resource “Mini Reader” is based on Midnight Ride and Paul Revere (April 1775), and it tells the story of how warning rides and quick action helped launch the first battles of the American Revolution. After years of protests and petitions, British troops still occupy Boston and plan a secret march to Concord to seize colonial weapons and ammunition. Colonists fear that if they lose these supplies, they will no longer be able to defend themselves or resist unfair control.

Leaders like Paul Revere, William Dawes, Samuel Prescott, Dr. Joseph Warren, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Captain John Parker all play a role in the growing crisis. The mini reader follows Abigail and Benjamin as they hear rumors in Boston’s marketplace, spot the lantern signals from the Old North Church, and watch militias gather on village greens and at Concord’s North Bridge. Inside hidden meeting rooms and along dark country roads, students see how the riders, the lantern code, and local militias work together. The story leads directly into the “shot heard round the world,” the British retreat back to Boston, and the realization that the Revolution has truly begun.

This resource is meant for grades 5-8 students and should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
