This U.S. History Reading Resource “Mini Reader” is based on Valley Forge and The American Crisis and it tells the story of how Washington’s army survived a harsh winter and emerged stronger than before. After defeats at Brandywine and Germantown, the Continental Army marches into Valley Forge cold, hungry, and poorly clothed, with many men lacking shoes and sleeping on frozen ground. The mini reader shows how the soldiers build log huts from scratch, face disease and shortages, and wonder whether the army can even survive the winter.

Students follow Abigail and Benjamin as they bring food and blankets to the camp, listen to Thomas Paine’s words about “times that try men’s souls,” and watch as Baron von Steuben arrives to drill the soldiers into a disciplined fighting force. Along the way, the narrative explains why Valley Forge was a test of both strength and spirit, how careful training and strict drills changed the army, and how news of the French alliance turned the encampment’s suffering into new hope. By the end, students see Valley Forge not just as a place of hardship, but as a turning point where perseverance, powerful ideas, and expert training transformed a desperate crowd of soldiers into a united Continental Army ready for the next phases of the Revolution.

This resource is meant for grades 5-8 students and should take about ~20 minutes to read depending on your classroom's level. An extra ~25 minutes for prep, discussion, vocabulary or short answer comprehension questions should also be planned.
