This U.S. History Differentiated Readers Theater script is based on the final major battle of the American Revolutionary War and the events that followed. General George Washington, with the help of French forces led by General Rochambeau and Marquis de Lafayette, plans to trap British General Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia. American and French troops march to Yorktown and surround the British by land and sea. The siege begins, and after continuous bombardment and a daring night assault led by Alexander Hamilton, the British defenses crumble. With supplies running low and no reinforcements in sight, General Cornwallis surrenders on October 19, 1781. The victory at Yorktown effectively ends the war. Two years later, the Treaty of Paris is signed, and Britain officially recognizes American independence. The script highlights the collaboration between American and French forces, the bravery of the soldiers, and the joy of the newfound freedom as the United States embarks on its journey as an independent nation.
