Six chairs have been set out in a Nevada meeting room in 1914. As neighbors gather, Clara must explain a proposed voting-rights amendment to people who agree, disagree, and still have questions. The conversations lead toward Nevada's decision to expand women's suffrage.

The stage is a 1914 Nevada civic discussion. Characters examine what voters were being asked to decide, why women's voting rights had changed unevenly across the country, and how people argued about representation in their own state. Students follow the political action through public discussion and a state vote.

Part 7 of 10 — Nevada State History, Grade 4. A complete, standalone historical Reader’s Theater lesson with two differentiated Mini Readers and aligned assessments.

The Story Students Perform

The stage is a 1914 Nevada civic discussion. Characters examine what voters were being asked to decide, why women's voting rights had changed unevenly across the country, and how people argued about representation in their own state. Students follow the political action through public discussion and a state vote. Fictional neighbors illustrate public disagreement; invented characters are not represented as verbatim historic campaign speakers. Voting-rights eligibility and legal language require historical context.

Historical Learning Focus

  • Recognize women's suffrage as a debate about voting rights and civic participation.
  • Place the Nevada voting-rights amendment in its 1914 historical context.
  • Understand that supporters and opponents offered different arguments during a public campaign.
  • Distinguish a proposed amendment, voter approval and the rights that changed afterward.
  • Compare claims and evidence without implying that suffrage ended every obstacle to equal participation.

Essential question: Recognize women's suffrage as a debate about voting rights and civic participation.

Teaching and Differentiation

Begin by introducing the essential question and a few content terms, then assign readers by interest and reading support needs. Perform selected scenes or all ten across a flexible schedule. Students can read the Original or Accessible Mini Reader before or after the play; use the same short-answer and challenge questions to check historical understanding. The separate Mini Readers are not different historical stories: their common evidence allows meaningful discussion across groups. Use the teacher pacing options for one, two or three class periods and extend with the inquiry activity below.

Skills and Classroom Uses

The lesson develops fluency, vocabulary in context, historical comprehension, chronology, comparison, source awareness, supported claims and discussion. A teacher can use it for whole-class performance, small-group reading, social-studies literacy, a short sub plan, review or an assessment check. Inquiry extension: Use the short-answer questions to trace a proposal through public discussion and a state election, then write an evidence-grounded civic argument.

Standards and Historical Accuracy

This resource addresses Nevada Grade 4 civics, community change, chronology and inquiry objectives supported by the Teacher Guide. The Teacher Guide identifies the specific alignments and their limits rather than claiming comprehensive coverage of every state standard. Accuracy note: Fictional neighbors illustrate public disagreement; invented characters are not represented as verbatim historic campaign speakers. Voting-rights eligibility and legal language require historical context. The classroom performance is fictionalized, while historical events, identities, places and dates follow the prepared research records. No instructional map is included; the lesson focuses on historical interpretation and evidence.
