Text Summary

Maya and Eli travel from High Point to Cape May and repeatedly revise their first impression that New Jersey is mostly one urban corridor. Northern relief leads them to watersheds and the Delaware River, then to the Piedmont corridor between New York and Philadelphia, varied urban/suburban/rural communities, the Pine Barrens, and the Atlantic coast. A change-over-time sequence connects long-lasting physical features with Lenape presence before European colonization, colonial land-use change, nineteenth-century transportation and industry, and today’s mixed landscapes. The final scenes compare maps and aerial images so students connect geographic evidence with human choices without treating a map as proof of every motive or agreement.
